Meghan Trainor has always been a champion of self-love through her music, but behind the scenes, she’s had to work hard to practice what she preaches. Now 31, the singer and mom of two has opened up about her personal struggles with body image, postpartum changes, and the long, committed journey that helped her shed 60 pounds and gain a new perspective on health.
For Meghan, this transformation has never been about fitting into industry standards. It’s been about being healthy for herself and her kids, and showing them what self-kindness really looks like.
The Moment That Sparked Meghan’s Transformation
After giving birth to her first son, Riley, in 2021, Meghan found herself at her heaviest weight ever. At 200 pounds, she admitted to feeling physically and emotionally low. Recovering from a C-section left her dealing with pain, insecurity, and mental health struggles.
Instead of accepting that as her new normal, Meghan made a decision. She wanted to be a present, active mom and role model. She committed to moving her body, improving her nutrition, and slowly but surely started to rebuild her confidence.
She Lost 60 Pounds the Healthy Way
Meghan’s approach was deliberate. She didn’t crash diet. Instead, she followed a consistent workout schedule, ate with intention, and tracked her progress over time.
“I did it the healthy way, the long way, the one pound a week way,” she told People. “And it’s a proud accomplishment that I never thought I could ever do.”
By focusing on sustainable progress, Meghan not only lost 60 pounds but also built habits that supported her mental health.
Using Mounjaro After Her Second Pregnancy
Following the birth of her second child, Meghan took a different approach by adding a prescribed diabetes medication, Mounjaro, to her toolkit. She chose this option after hearing recommendations from doctors and friends.
“Yes, I used science and support to help me after my second pregnancy,” she wrote on Instagram. “And I’m so glad I did because I feel great.”
She clarified that the medication was part of a larger health journey that included working with a dietitian, training with a coach, and making lasting lifestyle changes.
Making Fitness a Family Affair
Meghan’s husband, actor Daryl Sabara, has played a big role in her transformation. The couple often works out together and even participated in the 75 Hard fitness challenge after their first baby was born.
“He’s changed my entire life,” Meghan said. “He taught me how to cook healthy meals and how exercise helps your mental state too.”
Their kids even get involved. Meghan told Women’s Health that her little ones have “pretend kid weights” and join in their workouts for fun.
From Cardio to Weight Lifting
In the past, Meghan tried cardio workouts that left her feeling sore, inflamed, and discouraged. Now, she’s found her rhythm with strength training.
“Lifting weights has changed everything for me,” she shared. “I finally feel strong, and it doesn’t make you bulky. It makes you capable.”
These days, she trains with weights at least three times a week and feels the difference both on and off stage.
Touring Fit and Strong
Before her 2024 tour, Meghan told People that she trained hard with the goal of improving her stamina and strength onstage.
“I told my family, ‘I’m training for the Olympics,’” she joked. “I wanted to be able to dance and sing without feeling winded.”
Her effort paid off. During the tour, she felt more energized than ever, keeping up with her kids during the day and still putting on high-energy shows at night.
Accepting Her Postpartum Body
Like many new moms, Meghan struggled with her postpartum appearance, especially the stretch marks and changes caused by pregnancy.
“I love my baby, but I couldn’t look at my stretch marks and say, ‘Wow, I love them,’” she told Parents magazine.
It took therapy and active mental work for Meghan to accept her new body. Her therapist reminded her that her brain had been wired to think a certain way for years, and it would take daily effort to rewire that narrative.
Building Confidence One Step at a Time
Despite being known for empowering songs like “All About That Bass,” Meghan has been candid that her confidence didn’t come easy.
“Every time someone asks how I’m so confident, I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m not,’” she said. “Writing these songs is therapy for me.”
Still, she’s intentional about showing kindness to herself, especially because her children are watching.
“I don’t want them to hear me being mean to my body,” she told USA Today. “Because I don’t want them to do that to themselves.”
Nutrition and Protein-Focused Meals
Meghan understands that her workouts only work if her nutrition supports them. She now prioritizes protein and meal planning with help from delivery services and her husband’s research.
“My managers and I are always talking about hitting our protein counts,” she told Women’s Health. “It’s a goal and a dream when we actually do it.”
Her go-to breakfast is simple but effective: eggs and turkey bacon. For lunch and dinner, she prefers high-protein meals that fuel her fitness goals.
She Still Exercised While Pregnant
Even during her second pregnancy, Meghan stayed committed to movement. She shared treadmill and weight workout videos throughout her pregnancy and credited her trainer, Rebecca Stanton, for helping her stay strong.
“She taught me how strong I really am,” Meghan said. “Especially in the final month of pregnancy.”
Her Why: Staying Healthy for Her Kids
For Meghan, the biggest motivation isn’t vanity. It’s her family.
“I want to run and keep up with my kid,” she said. “I want to climb trees, play in the park, and never feel held back.”
She’s already surpassed her postpartum goals, losing all the baby weight and then some. But she says she’ll keep going, not just for herself, but for the younger version of her who once didn’t believe this was possible.
